St. James Episcopal Church

Education for Ministry, fondly known as EFM, begins every fall. It is our most advanced course for theological education at St. James.

WHAT IS IT?

A learning program for Biblical and theological understanding connected to the experiences of everyday life. Developed by the University of the South, The Education for Ministry program began with a vision on enrolling a few hundred students. Within a few years, it developed into a program reaching several thousand students with groups around the globe. More than 80 dioceses of the Episcopal Church as well as other denominations have contractual arrangements with EFM.

WHAT'S IT LIKE TO BE A MEMBER?

Though EFM is not designed primarily as a support group, members do become good friends. Groups must have at least six and no more than 12 members. The readings take about two and one-half hours per week and meetings usually last two and one-half hours also. Time in the meetings is divided between discussing content and reflecting theologically. Studying and learning from each other is a fulfilling way to explore the subjects covered.

DOES IT COST ANYTHING?

Yes, time, energy, and money. Tuition for this year is $425, however, because the Diocese of Kansas is an Institutional Sponsor and pays $75 for each student enrolled, we only pay $350. A test for all four years is provided along with your year level test.

WHAT ABOUT THE SUBJECT MATTER?

Year 1 is Hebrew Scripture, Year 2 New Testament, Year 3 Early Church Teaching and Liturgy, Year 4 American Church History and modern theological thought.

DO I HAVE TO SIGN UP FOR ALL FOUR YEARS?

No, you sign up for one year at a time, but you must take the years in order, Year 2 only after Year 1. Contact the church office, (316) 683-5686 for more information. Sign-up for the next session is August 24, 12:30 p.m. in the Lounge.
