EFM - Education For Ministry
|
Education for Ministry, fondly known as EFM, begins every fall. It is our most advanced course for theological education at St. James. WHAT IS IT?EFM is the premier program for adult Christian education in the Episcopal Church. It fosters theological reflection based on an informed understanding of the Christian tradition, leading to baptismal ministry in the world. It has more than 8,000 active students in its four-year program, and new online groups are burgeoning. A new strategic plan is in the making, which will prepare EfM for a growing role in the church during the coming decade. EFM is a four-year program, although the commitment is made one year at a time. The subject matter covered includes the Old Testament, New Testament, 2,000 years of church history, and the thoughts of religious scholars. Groups of six to twelve participants meet weekly with a mentor to discuss the reading materials and to clarify our understanding of our faith or beliefs that have implications for our actions in the world. WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?The principle requirement of the participant is to read the materials and participate in the weekly discussions held September through May. Although mentored and structured, there is leeway to delve as deeply into topics as one's time and interest allow. WHAT'S IT LIKE TO BE A MEMBER?Though EFM is not designed primarily as a support group, members do become good friends. Groups must have at least six and no more than 12 members. The readings take about two and one-half hours per week and meetings usually last two and one-half hours also. Time in the meetings is divided between discussing content and reflecting theologically. Studying and learning from each other is a fulfilling way to explore the subjects covered. DOES IT COST ANYTHING?Yes, time, energy, and money. The cost of the program is $350 per year. Scholarships and other financial support are available. DO I HAVE TO SIGN UP FOR ALL FOUR YEARS?No, you sign up for one year at a time, but you must take the years in order, Year 2 only after Year 1. HOW DO I SIGN UP?Contact Paul Rillema at (316) 634-6945 or paul.rillema@wichita.edu. |
