The Ministry of Music

St James Episcopal Church Choristers

We joyfully offer music to the Glory of God. We gather as choirs, and as instrumental and vocal soloists to lead our congregation in song, and to share the beauty of holiness in worship. Organist and Director of Music David Cason is glad to welcome to you to share in this ministry of music.

CHORAL MUSIC

The St. James Choir provides music at the 11:15 a.m., Sunday service. The choir is an SATB volunteer group supported by four section leaders. Long time members welcome new recruits fully into our round of work, prayer, and parties. The normal season begins Wednesday following Labor Day and concludes on Pentecost Sunday.

The St. James Choristers -- This children’s choir is made up of Novice Choristers, children in 2nd and 3rd grades, and Choristers, children in 4th grade and above. They lead worship at the 9:00 a.m., Sunday service. Surrounding all that we do in music, the welcoming of children into music ministry is of prime importance at St. James. We strive to be the most rewarding and productive avenue of choral music for your child! We follow the Royal School of Church Music program for music education curriculum and awards. The Choristers are led by music educator Jarl Moreland who brings valuable experience from his middle-school teaching positions. David Cason continues to teach liturgical music and serves as arranger and accompanist.

INSTRUMENTAL AND VOCAL SOLOS AND ENSEMBLES

Opportunities are available for non-choral music at various services and social occasions especially when our choirs are on holiday. Services and other religious activities needing a pianist or other musicians include The Christmas Pageant and Vacation Bible School. Music volunteers are often needed at the Old English Tea and other social occasions.

Summer Music is provided entirely by volunteers. Instrumental or vocal soloists or ensembles offer music at the offertory and communion as they are available.

VOLUNTEERS SUPPORTING MUSIC MINISTRY

Choir Parents are parents of our Choristers who help with the odds ‘n ends of choral culture. They often help with rehearsals in general ways, and help with the organization of vestments and occasionally the choral library.

Music Librarian - A volunteer position is available for someone interested in helping us with our library of octavos and other music. This is a new position in development and will be a big help as we continue to design the way our library is housed in our new Music Room.

INSTRUMENTS AND FACILITIES

The David Jones Music Room and Kawai Piano

Our Music Room is named after beloved choir member David Jones who provided generously for music ministry. A Kawai Grand Piano (RX-2) was purchased through his generosity and is placed in the Music Room for choral training and teaching. The Music Room is a beautiful new space designed by architect Larry Reynolds and completed in 2009 as a part a major building renovation and expansion.

The Holtkamp Organ

Our fine pipe organ was built by Walter Holtkamp, Jr. and installed in 1964. In 2007 the control systems were replaced and the console re-built by Burton Tidwell in addition to minor tonal revisions. These important upgrades were made possible by a generous gift from the St. James Trust. Click here for a specification and brief history of the organ.

Schulmerich Hand Bells and Tone Chimes

We have a 3-octave set of hand bells and a 2-octave set of tone chimes. A Hand bell Choir has been active in the past, and may re-organize in the future. Please let us know of your interest in Hand bell Choir.
