Opportunities to Serve - Outreach

SJEC OutreachAll Souls Guild

A ministry to help ease the burden and pain of death, this group provides food assistance around the time of a funeral. Contact DeAun Warfield.

Campus Ministry Outreach

The St. James Outreach Committee is interested in furthering college campus ministry in the Wichita area. For further information, contact Jeff Roper at 733-6175.

Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD)

When there is a disaster ERD is there, helping right along with other special groups. We collect money at the time of disaster to assist in rescue, feeding, and relocation of people affected by the disaster. ERD also helps the area to redevelop and recover once the crisis is over. If you would like to donate to Episcopal Relief and Development, please contact the church office.

Episcopal Social Services

We collect food, toiletries, and cash donations (Penny Sunday) for ESS to help the needy in our community. These donations are placed in the Deacon's Basket by the entrance doorway in the garden corridor. Your generosity is always needed and appreciated.

Grief Support Group

Of all the experiences faced by individuals and families, one of the most stressful is that of death. The Grief Support Groups are designed to create a confidential and supportive atmosphere in which those who grieve can find healing. A person does not need to be a member of St. James to participate. Each Wednesday throughout the year, the morning group meets at 9:30-10:30 a.m., and the evening group meets at 6:30-7:30 p.m. Contact Deedee Evans

Hospital Visitation

Our clergy visit the hospitals every weekday. If you are sick or having surgery, please call the church office at 683-5686 and let us know. We want to be there for you. Be sure to inform us so that can come and visit you as soon as possible.

Mailed Bulletin Ministry

The purpose of this ministry is to send the weekly newsletter or service bulletin to members who are homebound. Participants are assigned one week per month to pick up a packet of 6-12 addressed and stamped envelopes along and newsletters or bulletins. Short personal notes are included before the piece is mailed on Sunday or Monday.

Meal Ministry

There are times when people need temporary help with meals, such as after surgery or an injury or illness. If you would like to help provide meals, please contact Jeri Moss. If you need some temporary help with meals, contact the church office.

Offerings of Food

Offerings of food are asked for on a routine basis to help feed our boys and girls in the After School Program. Our youth collect food for the 5th Saturday Sack Lunch Program they support which occurs four or five times a year. An announcement along with a list of needed items will be in The Tower.

Therapy Dog Ministry

A Therapy Dog is chosen for its calm disposition and willingness to give unconditional love and acceptance to all people both young and old. A dog must be at least one year old and pass a certified Therapy Dog test given by a qualified examiner. If you have questions regarding Therapy Dogs and the process to become certified, please contact Diane Page through the Church office.

Kenya Outreach Projects

Here are some of the projects that our Diocese is working on...

  1. Make medical care accessible to town of Maai Mahiu -- Cost: $10,000 to have surveyors and road construction crews grade the road to make it accessible for vehicles without four-wheel drive.
  2. Provide public health education that is sustainable -- Maai Mahiu is located on the “AIDS Highway”, a highway that stretches form the East coast of Kenya into Uganda. This impoverished community of over 20,000 suffers with an adult population that is 70% HIV positive in addition to all sorts of other health concerns. Cost: $4,000 for the first year and $3,000 for the second year of school to provide mostly travel expenses to and from Kenya once a year, clothes and travel expenses to and from Kansas.
  3. Improve the environment in Maai Mahiu -- Maai Mahiu has no refuse collection service with trash collecting in the streets and throughout the community. This is a health and environmental concern.. Cost: $7,500 to dig the trash pit, steel drums, paint, uniforms/gloves, promotional material, and first eight weeks of salary for sanitation workers (anticipate income paying for salary by two months).
  4. Lunches and daycare for disabled children in Maai Mahiu -- There are about 20 children with disabilities that need daycare so that a parent can work. There are no services for these children in the community. Frequently public attitudes toward the mentally disabled make them unwanted and ignored. Cost: $350 per month for the rent, art supplies, food, games/toys, and equipment.
  5. Help with St. Andrews relocation in Kibera -- St. Andrews Anglican Church is located in Kibera, a slum on the edge of Nairobi where over 1 million people live on 500 acres. This church provides support and a place of worship for many of these poor people. Unfortunately the church has been slated for demolition by the railroad so that the right of way can be widened. Cost: Estimated to be at minimum $15,000 (higher if current building cannot be used for construction materials).
