The Guild Hall Players is a faith-based community theatre hosted by St. James as an outreach to the Wichita area theatre artists and audiences.
Begun in the summer of 2006 with a highly successful production of GODSPELL, the Guild Hall Players now operates year-round with one play or musical each of the four seasons of the year.
Productions range from classic musicals like CAROUSEL to serious dramas such as THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK to great comedies like HARVEY. The theatre is noted for its annual production of original Biblical dramas including THE WITNESSES telling the Gospel accounts, and ABRAHAM, ISSAC, & JACOB presenting the stories from Genesis. |
The productions are presented in either the beautiful Guild Hall or the breathtaking nave at St James. The theatre was begun with a grant from the St James Trust and is now self-supporting, based on ticket revenues and the primarily volunteer participation of local artists.
Guild Hall Players is a member of the Wichita Mary Jane Teall Theatre alliance of the ten leading local community and professional theatres in the area (we are the only church-based local theatre invited to participate with this organization). The GHP serves as an excellent outreach by St. James to the community. Of the more than 100 people who have worked on GHP productions over the past three years, most of them had their first exposure to St. James through the Players. And, of the several thousand people who have attended at least one of our productions, the majority have experienced the life and vitality of our beautiful Episcopal parish for the first time in coming to a Guild Hall production.
WHO STAFFS THE THEATRE?
The Guild Hall Players is run by a board of directors made up of individuals from both the St James parish and the Wichita theatre community. Dr. Phil Speary, an experienced theatre director and educator, is the artistic director. Other experienced area threatre artists and musicians such as Alexis Reisig-Hopkins, Deanne Zogleman, Jeff Garriott, and Matt Hanne have crafted the GHP productions.
WHO CAN BE A GUILD HALL PLAYER?
Anyone from the area who wants to be involved with the Guild Hall Players is certainly welcome. Auditions for the roles in each show are held about six weeks before each production. All those interested regardless of how much or little experience each has will be considered for casting in the shows. During the course of a season, roles are available for people from 7 to 70. If a person is not comfortable performing onstage, there are always all kinds of opportunities to help in preparation or running the shows. We are always in need of individuals interested in scenery, props, lights, costuming, ticket sales, and stage management. Of course, the easiest way to get involved is to come see a show!
Interested in being involved with the Players? Contact Dr. Phil Speary, artistic director for GHP, at 685-2652. Reservations for all productions are available through the St. James office.
